Abstract:To investigate the influence of the nail plate reinforcement and the number of bolts on the load-carrying behavior of bolted joints in timber structures, tensile experiments of 36 bolted joint specimens in 6 groups were carried out. The failure modes, ultimate loads, initial slip stiffness, and the ductility were mainly analyzed. A comparative analysis was made between bolted joint specimens reinforced with nail plates with unreinforced specimens. Experimental results show that the introduction of the nail plate reinforcement can remarkably reduce the splitting failure of the connected timber members, and the mechanical behaviors of both timber and bolts are fully utilized; the ultimate load of the bolted joint specimens with nail plate reinforcement obtain a significant enhancement up to 100%, and the introduction of the nail plate reduces the bolt group effect evidently; the ductility coefficient of the bolted joint specimens reinforced with nail plates decreases gradually in terms of the ductility, and with the increase of the number of bolts, the ductility coefficient of the unreinforced bolted joint specimens decreases and the ductility coefficient of the bolted joint specimens reinforced with nail plates shows a increasing trend; in addition, there is no obvious correlation between the reinforcement with the nail plate and the initial slip stiffness.
